Building Blocks!!!

Over the past week or so, I've been getting acclimated to Minecraft...I couldn't really understand the point of it at first- I actually had my 7 year old cousin enthusiastically rant about the game, after which point I decided I really should give it a shot. I was still confused. That is, until Mike posted his awesome tutorial videos (Thanks Mike!!!). As a result, I was able to build a small house (or room, whatever you want to call it).

Andddd here it is!! Disclaimer: it isn't the most extravagant, but it's still functional!

Second Life Adventures

Greetings, all!

I haven't posted in quite a while, which is probably because of how frustrated I've gotten with our new platform, Second Life. I agree with everyone else who says that it's tough to adjust, because it is- people are a tad bit meaner in Second Life. For example, the first time I was exploring, I did not realize that my mic was on, and the administrator of a group I was exploring wrote a message to me saying something along the lines of "If you're not going to talk, turn your mic off. You're an adult so act like it." I know that isn't too rude but it definitely caught me off guard. Needless to say, I laid off of the exploring for a few days.

On a more positive note, the VWBPE conference is going on right now, and I attended my first session today (NonProfit Commons). Although I couldn't stay for the duration of the panel due to connectivity issues, I was still able to stay long enough to get the gist of what was going on. It was pretty cool to see people get together and to hear the panelist's story of how she became involved in Second Life!

This obviously isn't the best quality picture (again, I had wifi issuses), but here is Malo at the panel!

Jokaydia Updates

It's been 2 weeks since I last posted, and I must say, things are still progressing surprisingly well. I just finished building my first object (on my own), which happened to be a pecan pie. I know I still have some work to do, as the crust doesn't have the texture that I'd like it to. However, I am still proud of myself or building something despite it not being completely up to par. Perhaps my next build will be a masterpiece!

First Steps in Jokaydia

These first few days have been...manageable. This is the first time I've been in a virtual world, much less a virtual learning environment. However, I'm enjoying it. It provides a certain level of anonymity that cannot be obtained in an actual classroom.

Logistically, things have been smoother than I anticipated. So far, I've created my avatar and performed quite a few missions, and I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. I even think I'm ready to go beyond the basic missions assigned and move on to some other exploration missions.

I hope that things continue to go smoothly, especially when it comes time to use other virtual world programs.
